Join Douglas County ARES
Become part of a team of licensed amateur radio volunteers who serve Douglas County when it matters most. No experience in emergency communications required — just a valid license and a willingness to learn.
What You'll Need to Join
Membership in Douglas County ARES is open to any licensed amateur radio operator who wants to serve the community.
Valid FCC Amateur Radio License
Any license class (Technician, General, or Amateur Extra) qualifies. A Technician license is sufficient for most local ARES operations on VHF/UHF frequencies.
FEMA ICS Training
ARES members are required to complete FEMA IS-100, IS-200, and IS-700 online courses (free). Additional ICS courses are encouraged and supported by the group.
Participation in Nets & Exercises
Members are expected to check in to the weekly Monday night net and participate in at least one training exercise per year.
ARES Registration
All members complete a DC-ARES membership application, provide a copy of their license info, equipment capabilities, and availability. Additionally, all members are required to have a County Background Check before acceptance to the Team.
How to Get Your Ham Radio License
Getting licensed is easier than you think. Most people earn their Technician license in a few weeks of casual study.
Study for the Technician Exam
The Technician license is the entry-level FCC amateur radio license. The exam covers basic regulations, operating practices, and electronics. Most people pass after 10–20 hours of study.

Volunteer Examiner (VE) teams administer the exam locally. The ARRL exam search tool lists upcoming sessions in Douglas County and nearby areas. The exam fee is typically $15.

After passing, the FCC issues your callsign within a few days. You can begin operating immediately once your license appears in the FCC database.
